We happily provide tours for people staying on the cayes. The tour prices are the same as from Belize City, where you will picked up. We prefer that you take the San Pedro Express Water Taxi. Our current experience tells us that it is best that you just buy a one way ticket. It's $10 US from Caye Caulker and $15 US from San Pedro, one way. There is no discount for round trip, and sometimes people with round trip tickets are made to wait while others board the boat.
Some people prefer to fly to the Municipal Airport, where we can also pick you up. Just call and tell me which flight and airline (Tropic Air or Maya Island Air) you will be taking, 602-8975.
If you have special needs or want to make special arrangements, like being picked up at the International Airport, do a tour and be dropped off in San Ignacio, we can do this, and I will be happy to call you to discuss this and the cost, or other needs.
Note: there is a good bit of travel when going from Belize City to Xunantunich, which is almost to the Guatemalan border.
Cave tubing is one of the most unique opportunities offered in
Belize. It is the tour we love the most, do the best,
and have done longer than most others. This is reflected
in the name of our website, cavetubing.bz, and we have
several pages devoted to cave tubing.
Lamanai, meaning "submerged crocodile" is the only Maya site in the whole 5 countries of the Mundo Maya where the archaeologists have been able to find the name the Mayas actually used. There are many structures there, and tools were found for farming, which helped the people survive. During 300-900 AD it was one of the most advanced sites and survived through the Pre-classic, Classic, and Post- classic eras. The High Temple is one where you a majestic view of the New River and the surrounding area.
The trip to Lamanai begins at the Toll Bridge south of Orange Walk, with a trip down the New River to the site. The boat ride down is 1.5 hours and includes stops to see crocodiles, iguanas, monkeys, and birds. There is a lunch buffet when you reach the site, before the tour. Your boat captain will be the tour guide for Lamanai. There is more information about Lamanai here.
You need to be in good physical shape and be prepared for swimming, climbing, and crawling. You need hiking boots or tennis shoes, not sandals. At one place you even take off your shoes and walk in your socks so you don't damage what you walk on. Also you will be given a helmet for protection. And you have to go out the same way you came in!
There are benefits if you are hearty and brave. It is like a living museum. You see pieces of pottery, 14 skeletal remains, and have the experience of being in a huge chamber like a cathedral.
From Belize City, it takes 1.5 hours to get to the junction where you turn and then you go inland for 6-7 miles. The roads are not great, and you cannot make it in a low vehicle. The rest rooms available are "out houses," so it is not for the faint hearted. For those who are adventurous, it is an unforgettable experience!
The zipline canopy tour has been taken over by a Jamaican company, BakABush. The same experienced guides are providing the tours. It is easy and safe, and the guides who help you are well trained and do it every day. They provide helmets, harnesses, and gloves. You are assisted whenever you need it, like getting down. When excavated they found jade, including the largest piece ever
found in the whole Mundo Maya. It is a representation of the God of Sun
known to the Mayas as Kinich Ahau. It has only been partially excavated.
You can find more information about Altun Ha here
Wikipedia.
Altun Ha is located
map about 45 min. to an hour from Belize City on a bumpy road. We call it
the "massage road."
Xunantunich means Stone Lady, and like most Maya sites is a modern name. The highest structure, El Castillo, is 132 feet high, and from the top you get a panoramic view of both western Belize and of Guatemala. Fine stucco facades or friezes can be viewed on El Castillo. For more information click here.
Xunantunich is a few miles west of San Ignacio, and from Belize City it is a one and a half to two hour drive. There is a market of craft stalls near the highway, with many products from local craftsmen as well as from near-by Guatemala. You have to cross the river in a hand-cranked ferry, and you must disembark your vehicle for the crossing.
Tikal is known as the Maya's New York City, because there are many skyscrapers, with 5 temples that are very high. Tikal means the "place of voices."
From Belize City, the border of Guatemala is about a two hour drive. You will have to pay a departure fee of $18.75 when you leave Belize. Getting into Guatemala is very easy, and if you want to tip, they are happy with 10 quetzales, or $1.50 US. Then you board a van in Guatemala, they will not allow Belizean vans into the country. There a guide will be hired and the drive is very easy.
You will travel to Mechor, and then to El Remate, then go from there to Tikal. You will have your own private guide at Tikal, and you will have about 4 hours at the site. There are many gift shops and there will be time for shopping.
For more information about Tikal click here.
It s a special treat for people interested in the wildlife and animals of Belize. All the animals are native to the country, and it was developed by it's director, Sharon Matola, who started it in 1983 "as a last ditch effort to provide a home for a collection of wild animals which had been used in making documentary films about tropical forests." The delightful thing is you see animals in their natural habitat, not all caged up, and they have lots of freedom. There are clever and educational signs all around the zoo, and it's educational as well as entertaining. It's a great addition to any tour in the Belize City area, and is located about 30 minutes from Belize City, and you can spend as much time there as you like.
